SUMMARY:3/29: NEC w/ Martin Baily\, Brookings: "Productivity Puzzles and the Recovery"
LOCATION:NAM Offices\, 1331 Pennsylvania Avenue\, NW Suite #600\, METRO: Federal Triangle or Metro Center
DESCRIPTION:http://thenationaleconomistsclub.shuttlepod.org/ViewEvent.ashx?eventId=461079\n\n**NEW LOCATION: National Assn. of Manufacturers offices (NAM) 1331 Pennsylvania Ave Ste 600**\n \n Martin Baily Bernard L. Schwartz Chair\, Economic Policy Development\n The Brookings Institution\n\n : “Productivity Puzzles and the Recovery”\n \n The speaker will explore three related issues. First\, there has been a consensus view that the decline in manufacturing employment is the result of rapid productivity in the sector. However\, recent papers have suggested both that manufacturing productivity has been overstated and that trade is the main reason for the loss of manufacturing jobs. Second\, can we make sense of the shifting pattern of productivity over the business cycle and the apparent breakdown in the “normal” relationship between GDP and employment or unemployment. Third\, during the 1990s potential GDP growth was over 3 percent\, contributing to the great improvement in incomes and budget balance. Are we now in a “new normal” of slow trend growth?\n \n \n Note: Registration is open through Wednesday\, 3-28-12. Anyone desiring to attend after this date will just walk in at the door\, but cannot be guaranteed the lunch will be available.
