"Does the Stock Market Distort Investment Incentives?"

We evaluate differences in investment behavior differently between stock market listed and privately held firms.  In the U.S., listed firms invest less and are less responsive to changes in investment opportunities compared to observably similar, matched private firms. We suggest that these patterns are most consistent with managerial short-termism.
