"Policy Analysis With CGE Models: Can It Contribute? Can It Be Understood?"
Peter Dixon has been doing CGE (Computable General Equilibrium) modeling for governments and businesses in Australia, the U.S., China and several other countries for 35 years. In this talk he will outline what CGE modeling contributes to the understanding of several contemporary issues including: unauthorized immigration; trade liberalization; stimulus policies, greenhouse policies and biofuels. He will argue that CGE messages can be explained quantitatively (not just qualitatively) in terms of simple economic mechanisms and that policy advisors should insist that modelers provide such explanations.
