“Ethics for Government Economists”
Recent discussion in the broader discipline about professional ethics for economists and the ethical content of economics naturally leads to questions about the nature and adequacy of the ethical frame for economists in the civil service. The setting in which they work imposes unique obligations with respect to ethics and conduct but also the potential for challenges to professional integrity. Susan will review the ethical standards and code of conduct pertaining to all career civil servants, consider the nature of Federal economists’ ethical obligations due to their work and profession, examine circumstances that frequently may raise ethical questions, and suggest steps that Federal economists might take to strengthen awareness and understanding of their ethical obligations.
